User Led Organisation (ULO)
A user-led organisation (ULO) is one where the people the organisation represents , or provides a service to, have a majority on the management committee or board, and where there is clear accountability to members and/or service users (Morris 2006).
In WECIL's case it means we are run by and for Disabled people.
The project ran until March 2011 and looked at supporting over 80 ULOs in Bristol, South Gloucestershire and BaNES. This was primarily done by providing a set of resources, information and training events which were requested by the organisations. In Bristol a ULO Forum was also created with ten of the most established ULOs in the region represented. The Forum reported to the City Council and has produced a set of principles for good working practice between ULOs and Council officers. These principles are in the process of being incorporated into a number of strategy document. The Forum is also represented at the Steering Group for the Health and Social Care Network for the new VCS Assembly which is being facilitated by Voscur. For more information on the Assembly, please vist the Voscur website at: www.voscur.org
In South Gloucestershire the work to support ULOs is being continued by CVS South Glos. For their contact details or to find out more, please go to: www.cvs-sg.org.uk
Although the project has now finished, WECIL are keen to support user led organisations in the region and if you would like copies of the resources and training materials produced please do contact us.
