  • Youth Personal Assistance Support Scheme (Youth PASS)

“Supporting young Disabled people to gain independence, choice and control through working with Personal Assistants”

    Who was Youth PASS for?

Youth PASS (Personal Assistance Support Scheme) was for any young Disabled person (aged 11-19) living in Bristol who would benefit from using personal assistance.

    What did Youth PASS offer?

    • It offered young Disabled people the opportunity to use a personal assistant (PA), often for the first time.
    • It provided support and training relating to the issues surrounding the use of personal assistance.
    • It provided Personal Assistants to young Disabled people on work experience organised by schools or colleges.
    • It offered support for parents whose son/daughter participated in the project.

    Why did Youth PASS exist?

We believe that young Disabled people should be included in all aspects of life alongside all other young people. Some young Disabled people require assistance so that they can be included on an equal basis. Youth PASS existed to promote inclusion through the provision of effective personal assistance.

Youth PASS gave young Disabled people the opportunity to:-

    • Use a personal assistant (PA) and be supported to find out more about Pass
    • Have more freedom to get out and about, and to become more involved in community life (for example joining youth groups, shopping, meeting up with friends).
    • Be more independent, at home or out and about
    • Develop skills and knowledge
    • Hang out with friends
    • Make new friends
    • Have fun.

The long term aim of Youth PASS was to promote independence, equality and inclusion through the provision of personal assistance to young Disabled people.

We also aimed to promote good practice, locally and nationally, to organisations and professionals who work with young Disabled people.

    Youth PASS was funded by:

Youth PASS was originally set up with funding from the Bristol Regeneration Partnership (part of the SRB YOUR group of projects) and the Neighbourhood Support Fund (NSF).   In addition, we also received funding from Bristol Social Services and Health (Disabled Children Service) and the New Deal Community at Heart.
