[TITLE]: A Small Storytellers Production - With Listening Partnership
A grey cityscape appears, with Bristol landmarks picked out - Stokes Croft towerblocks, St. Paul's underpass, the hospital incinerator chimney...
"When I wake up I just think, 'Oh no, not another day of this'."
"Made me feel very different, very sort of low."
"All my confidence was thrown back."
"Constantly questioning myself..."
"Even now I feel, when I go up the shops, a bit scared."
"Yeah, definitely. I worry quite a lot about going out."
"In your head you're replaying what's happened."
"Day in day out, week in week out, every day of my life."
[TITLE]:'In Our Own Words'
Four people are sitting at a picnic table within a gated play area, next to some green portacabins...
Girl 1: "That exam was really difficult today wasn't it?"
Boy 1: "Yeah. Question number nine was really hard as well today."
Boy 2: "I found it a bit too hard."
Girl 1: "Did you see that girl walk out the classroom earlier, before the exam started?"
Boy 2: "Yeah, I think she had a helper didn't she?"
Girl 1: "Yeah I think so. It looked like that lady was gonna do it for her."
Girl 2 thinks: ["What if she gets a better mark than me? I'll be gutted!]"
Boy 2: "Exams are meant to be done by ourselves, aren't they?"
Girl 2: "I bet she was cheating."
Boy 1+2: "Yeah, definitely"
Girl 1: "Yeah, I bet she was really"
Boy 2: "You lot.. she's coming. Shhh!"
Girl 2: "Shhh"
Girl 2 thinks: ["I hope she didn't hear me"]
Girl 3 walks up to the table...
Girl 3: ["What were they talking about?"]
Girl 3: "Hi guys!"
All: "Hi. You alright?"
Girl 3: "Exam was really hard, wasn't it?"
Girl 1: ["You don't know how lucky you are"]
Girl 1: "Yeah, I bet it wasn't hard for you though"
Girl 3: "What do you mean? It was the same questions."
Girl 1: ["But someone did it for you."]
Girl 1: "Well, you were cheating!"
Girl 3: "No!"
All: "Cheat, cheat, cheat!"
Girl 3: ["They're not my friends if they don't understand that I need help".]
Girl 3 walks off, head bowed...
Scene changes to show an animated cat with glasses. Girl 3 continues to talk while cries of 'cheat, cheat...' carry on in the background...
Girl 3: "I didn't like school at all. When I walked through the steps, they spat on my bag. I talked to the teacher, and he talked to the bullies, but the bullies ignored the teacher and carried on."
Scene changes to focus on a girl with brown hair and glasses. She is playing bowls with her friend...
Girl 4: "I've been called names and I've been taunted, and I've been in situations where I've felt trapped, and not been able to say how I feel about those people that have bullied me, because they've made me feel really small."
Scene changes to show a boy fishing by a lake...
Boy 3: "A few years ago, I was just walking along one of the roads in my area, talking to my friend on the phone, and then next minute there's this gang of people come round the corner, and said, 'You've got three seconds to hand over your phone or I'll do you over.' At that point I was thinking, 'should I give it to him, or should I not give it to him'? I was just getting more scared and more scared."
Scene changes to an animated cat in a hat, in a wheelchair. A girl's voice takes up a new story...
Girl 5:"They used to tie me to a skipping rope, and they used to tie it round my chair, and they used to start spinning me round, and I used to think it's supposed to be fun. Then I realised they were just being really mean. I used to fall out, and then everyone would stare at me." "They used to ask, 'Do you sleep in your wheelchair?', or 'How do you go to the toilet?' I used to think that's really personal, 'cos it's my life out of school.
Scene changes to show a girl playing with a guinea pig...
Girl 6:"If I fight with my brothers at home, and if my glasses break, they would try to fix them to another frame, and then put pipe cleaners round them. Then, me and my brothers went up the shop, and then these kids came up to me and said 'can I try them on?' and I said 'No'. Then they started taking fun and mickey out of me."
Scene changes to show an animated character...
Boy 4:"Got beaten up in the nose, in the mouth, in the legs. Everywhere on my body. I was upset... worried... that I might need a hospital bed by the end of it."
Scene changes to show a girl making a felt picture...
Girl 7:"When I was about 15, someone put a window down on me, and it broke two of my bones in my fingers, but the blood was everywhere. It wasn't very nice either."
Scene goes back to the bowling girl...
Girl 4:"These days with kids in school, they're not taught generally enough about what young disabled people feel and I think if they were taught the feelings of disabled people, they would think twice about what they do."
